Rowley Station after a heavy fall of snow. 29th January 1910 6.20 pm Blackhill - Darlington train was hold up at Rowley from 6.53 pm on Friday 28 Jan to 4.30 pm on the 30 Jan because the line ahead was blocked by snow. Info from Mr G W Bainton: His father, Mr G R Bainton, the stationmaster is on right. This particular incident started on Friday 29th January 1910, a day of heavy snow and difficulty was experienced in keeping the line open to Burn Hill. General view of Washington Chemical Works. Chimney on right still standing in 1966, but little else remaining except wasteheaps. Left of centre on the horizon is Penshaw Monument. This view is looking south from the north bank of the River Wear at Washington Staithes. The furnace (centre back) is Isaac Lowthian Bell's blast furnace for smelting aluminium. High Level Bridge
The High Level Bridge (from Gateshead end of bridge) designed by Robert Stephenson and constructed between 1845 and 1849. The five piers are of local sandstone. Piled coffer dams, in which the foundation work was carried out, were left in place to protect the piers. An NER tank engine is passing over the bridge.

The Consett Iron Company's Works: locomotive sheds at Templetown, showing a new shed built in 1921. Right front can be seen one of the company's "E" class steam cranes and next to it is the jib of a hand crane (see 24072), centre and left are side tanks, a saddle tank, and two vertical boilers for cranes, these have been left outtside after manufacture to "cure", to help seal up leaks with oxidation (very interesting photograph showing this happening). 18th May 1921.
