Mrs Martha A Gosney of East Boldon was a former teacher, church worker, and founder of two women's institutes and a youth club. She taught at West Boldon CE School at the start of the century, and also taught at Boldon Colliery Boys School. Mrs Gosney had a life-long association with St Nicholas's Church, West Boldon and served on the Parochial Church Council for many years. Her was husband Richard died seven years before his wife.
