Fishwives
Two Holy Island fishwives carrying either fish for sale or bait they have collected on the backs of their donkeys. See Spec/Pho 26.10.77 - letter from John Mole. Fishwives used to sell fish in Lowick where they were known as Lang Sal and Fat Bess (Sal Cromarty and Bess Morris, the latter wearing a quilted skirt). The name Cromarty still exists on Holy Island but Morris is extinct now. From glass plate in Newcastle Central Library. See Spec. Pho 26/10/1977.
